Our story is centered at a figure skating facility located in the mountains. Figure skaters from all over the world come to the facility since some of the best ice skating coaches in the U.S. are teaching there. The rink has two ice surfaces. Many hours are devoted to figure skating. Drama and jealously goes on each day at this particular ice arena. Although the stories below may be true, the names have been changed to protect the innocent.
How do they make it all work? Some say this is a "rich man's sport", which is sad when there are kids out there with technical talent and star quality, but do not have the kind of money they need to get the amount of coaching that is appropriate for their level.
ReplyDeleteScholarships come at the higher levels. What about the younger kids who are working hard to reach those levels, but whose families cannot find the money they need for the lessons required. It's sad. Is it unfair to need to be rich to compete?
Any suggestions? Any angels out there with money to spare? Of course, there are children who need food, school books, cavities filled; socks, shoes and warm winter coats, too. That seems more important when it is not your child who desperately wants to work hard and make a mark in this sport. It is more important, actually no matter what, for anyone with a social conscience.
Are there any answers, besides being ready to mortgage a house, take a second or third job, etc.? Because that doesn't even provide enough, over the ten or so years it may take to reach the sponsored World Champion levels. What can one do to help make a child's dream come true?
