Finances

At our skating facility, there are the many families where skating is financed completely by grandparents, and then, there are families who scrape together every penny to pay for their child's skating. Somehow, they all make it work.

  1. How do they make it all work? Some say this is a "rich man's sport", which is sad when there are kids out there with technical talent and star quality, but do not have the kind of money they need to get the amount of coaching that is appropriate for their level.

Scholarships come at the higher levels. What about the younger kids who are working hard to reach those levels, but whose families cannot find the money they need for the lessons required. It's sad. Is it unfair to need to be rich to compete?

Any suggestions? Any angels out there with money to spare? Of course, there are children who need food, school books, cavities filled; socks, shoes and warm winter coats, too. That seems more important when it is not your child who desperately wants to work hard and make a mark in this sport. It is more important, actually no matter what, for anyone with a social conscience.

Are there any answers, besides being ready to mortgage a house, take a second or third job, etc.? Because that doesn't even provide enough, over the ten or so years it may take to reach the sponsored World Champion levels. What can one do to help make a child's dream come true?
